Female Genital Mutilation

So, Female genital mutilation (FGM), also known as female genital cutting and female circumcision, is the ritual cutting or removal of some or all of the external female genitalia.

Types of FGM

Type 1:  this is the partial or total removal of the clitoral glans (the external and visible part of the clitoris, which is a sensitive part of the female genitals), and/or the prepuce/ clitoral hood (the fold of skin surrounding the clitoral glans)

Type 2:  this is the partial or total removal of the clitoral glans and the labia minora (the inner folds of the vulva), with or without removal of the labia majora (the outer folds of skin of the vulva ).

Type 3: Also known as infibulation, this is the narrowing of the vaginal opening through the creation of a covering seal. The seal is formed by cutting and repositioning the labia minora, or labia majora, sometimes through stitching, with or without removal of the clitoral prepuce/clitoral hood and glans (Type I FGM).

Third type is most common around the world in simple words they remove the small lips and big lips. Clit is removed and put the skin together and stitch it and leave the small opening.
And women's are expected to mensurate and urinate from there, have babies, intercourse from that small hole.

Why this happens?

This happens because all community thinks if the girl do not go through this ritual she will be not considered "cleaned/Pure" and no one will marry her in future.
Community makes them belief that this is for their own good and for upcoming life.

"Girls have to go through this at the age of 7 to 15.
The girls had been prepared from the childhood only by saying that it's a tradition you are going to be washed and cleaned."

This mostly happen on a big table in front lots of people. They use razor blade for cutting, girls keep screaming, blood all over on the floor and little bit of skin.

There have been documented adverse health effects such as infections, cysts, chronic pain, infertility, reduced or lack of sexual pleasure, and death, but some women advocate for the sexual pleasure it brings them.

The immediate health complications include shock, haemorrhage, infections and psychological consequences. The long term health risks consist of chronic pain, infections, cheloids formation, primary infertility, birth complications, danger to the new born and psychological consequences .

Victim speaks..

The young girls who have been gone through this have shared their emotion-

"I remember the first cut of blade, you know going through your skin so sharp."

"I had a horrible pain I can't explain it, like I was burning."

"I didn't stop crying, I didn't stop bleeding"

"It's indescribable, it's kind a pain that never leave you doesn't matter your having a good day or a bad day, you always hear image that coming to your head standing on your own full of blood looking at your flesh"

Start talking about it

This is the topic really raised up or talked about, people feel uncomfortable ignorant and wish it had never happened.
Even today more than 200 million young girls alive have been cut, over 200 million girls who have gone through a fine pain and appalling abuse. And the sad part is people or a community in a power convince them it was for their own good.

Entrenched in deep-rooted sexist patriarchal beliefs about a woman’s position in society and acceptable sexual behaviour, FGM has been proven to have unimaginably deviating consequences on those who are subjected to it, both physically and mentally. The impacts recorded have included, and not been limited to; depression, suicide, infections, complications in childbirth later in life and increase risk of newborn deaths.

There are thousands of young girls experiencing this abuse every single day and I bet most of us really bring a self to even talk about it.
We are afraid that we do not have much knowledge, is this not our place to comment. But we will raise our voice a little, a big change may come.If you understand the pain deeply and raise your voice a little, then our voice may bring a little change.

They meet them bleed for purity, how pure is their soul after committing such sin?

what I think is FGM a child abuse and give girl mental trauma at very young age!

This tradition is a total rubbish. Suffering from a lot of pain is an evidence that a girl is pure and what about the boys. How can a girl confirm whether a boy is pure or not? 🀦‍♀️
BTW you have done a great job❤ by writing on this issue It is well written.
